Showcase Artifact 2

Introduction: As part of my Honors College experience, I had the incredible opportunity to study abroad in Costa Rica for a week over spring break. This program focused on the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) in Costa Rica, allowing me to explore global challenges such as environmental sustainability, social equity, and economic development in a real-world context. Studying abroad provided me with a firsthand understanding of how different communities approach these challenges and reinforced my commitment to making a positive impact in my future career. This experience was especially meaningful as it helped me develop adaptability, cross-cultural communication skills, and a broader global perspective, essential qualities for my goal of becoming a physician.

Honors Experience: My selected Honors experience was my study abroad trip to Costa Rica over spring break, where I had the opportunity to explore the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) in a real-world setting. Throughout the week, I engaged in hands-on learning experiences that deepened my understanding of sustainability, environmental conservation, and social responsibility. One of the most meaningful aspects of this trip was working directly with the local community in Uvita, where I participated in service-learning projects aimed at environmental preservation.

During my time in Uvita, I contributed to sustainability efforts by picking up trash along the beach, helping to maintain the area’s natural beauty, and protecting marine life. Additionally, I worked on an educational project by building signs with tree names and planting them in front of the corresponding trees. This initiative aimed to promote environmental awareness and appreciation among locals and visitors alike. These hands-on activities allowed me to see how small-scale efforts contribute to broader sustainability goals and reinforced my commitment to global responsibility.

Artifact: As part of my study abroad experience, I created a video in which I interviewed two locals from Uvita about how the SDGs have impacted their community and what they are doing to create change. Through these conversations, I gained valuable insight into the challenges and successes of implementing sustainable practices at a local level. This video serves as a powerful reflection of my learning, showcasing how community-driven initiatives can make a significant impact in achieving sustainability goals.

Reflection:

My study abroad experience in Costa Rica was transformative, deepening my understanding of sustainability and global responsibility. Through hands-on projects like beach cleanups and tree identification, I saw firsthand how small actions contribute to lasting environmental change. Interviewing locals about the SDGs further highlighted the importance of community-driven solutions.

This experience strengthened my adaptability, cultural awareness, and communication skills—essential for my future in medicine. It reinforced my commitment to providing culturally competent care and addressing broader social and environmental factors in healthcare. The lessons I learned will guide me as I work to make a meaningful impact in diverse communities.

Showcase Artifact 3

Introduction: My undergraduate journey has shaped my passion for culturally competent healthcare and patient advocacy. This Showcase Artifact highlights three key experiences: studying abroad in Costa Rica to research the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), working as a Patient Care Technician (PCT), and volunteering in community health outreach. These experiences have strengthened my global perspective, hands-on clinical skills, and commitment to healthcare equity, preparing me for medical school and a future in medicine.

First honors experience: Studying abroad in Costa Rica gave me the opportunity to engage with locals and interview them about the country’s progress on the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). This experience deepened my understanding of global health challenges, sustainability efforts, and healthcare accessibility. Conducting interviews improved my cross-cultural communication skills and broadened my perspective on how healthcare varies across different systems.        Artifact: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zFY1b3zlPQY

Second experience: I created a bilingual (English and Spanish) pamphlet about HIV, explaining what it is, how it spreads, prevention methods, and available resources. This experience strengthened my ability to communicate complex health information clearly while addressing healthcare disparities in Spanish-speaking communities. It aligns with my professional goals as a future physician, emphasizing the importance of culturally competent care and public health education. The project demonstrated my commitment to improving healthcare accessibility and patient literacy.          Artifact: https://5a42a5db-7b5c-45ee-a8e6-ca7ea728daec.filesusr.com/ugd/0931e7_d3593c83d5d847a19042d08fa5d39832.pdf

Third experience:I volunteered at the Indy Black Expo, representing Franciscan Health, where I helped provide health education and resources to the community. I assisted with health screenings, distributed educational materials, and engaged with attendees to raise awareness about preventative healthcare and available services. This experience strengthened my ability to connect with diverse populations and promote health literacy in underserved communities. It aligns with my commitment to healthcare advocacy, particularly in underserved communities, and further prepares me for a future in community health and patient-centered care.

Reflection: These three experiences have significantly shaped my growth as an aspiring physician. My study abroad in Costa Rica deepened my global health perspective, while creating a bilingual HIV pamphlet strengthened my ability to communicate health information across cultural and linguistic barriers. Volunteering at the Indy Black Expo reinforced my commitment to community health advocacy and patient education. Together, these experiences have enhanced my cultural competency, communication skills, and dedication to underserved populations, all of which are essential for my future career in medicine. These lessons will continue to guide my journey toward becoming a physician who provides equitable, patient-centered care.
